There are many different forms of depression. Even though many Americans suffer from depression, they don't know it or if they do, they won't admit it even to themselves. Studies estimate that at least 14 million Americans suffer from depression. Fewer than 4.7 million of those, about 1/3, will seek medical help. What are the reasons? Perhaps it is because depression is classified as a mental illness. Nobody wants that label applied to them. People who suffered from mental illness were, at one time in history, ridiculed by society. When depression became apparent in people they were often sent away to clinics for the mentally ill. The good news is things have become different. But the old stereotypes are still with us. This motivates many people to hide their condition from others or even from themselves.
Many factors contribute to depression. It is not a simple diagnosis. Chemical balance in the brain, DNA, biology and even environment have to be considered. Drug abusers and alcoholics can develop depression, but so can people just dealing with every day life situations and stress. Depression can come from all of these elements. In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated? There are many options for treatment and even cure, just as there are many causes for depression. It comes down to a case by case consideration as to which options are best for someone who suffers depression
Many claim they have a cure for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. When considering which option is best there are a few considerations that must be examined. Is there evidence to show that the option works to treat depression? Is a prescription drug or herbal treatment being applied in the proper quantity to show results? Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards? Some of the most popular treatments deserve a look.
Prescription drugs and psychotherapy, combined, has been a common treatment for many forms of depression. SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are prescribed to treat depression. One of the most popular, Prozac, was first used in the United States in 1988. Many others such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox have followed it. All of these work. But side effects are common, including causing more depression. That's the reason natural treatments are gaining popularity. A popular herbal cure is St. Johns Wort extract. It must have between three and five percent hyperforin to work. It has been proven to work as well as Prozac with fewer side effects. Seeking a cure is important, but so is convincing people to get help. If you think you have depression, or if someone you know shows the signs, visit a doctor.
